In a good BDSM scene, to an onlooker the lines of consentuality may blur and at times seem to be completely ignored. 

The same is true of our stories and pictures, and video clips; the lines of consentuality may appear to the reader or viewer to have disappeared altogether... Trust us here, this is not the case. 

Practically speaking, nobody can play with a broken toy, whether that be physically or mentally. And we are at least acquainted and sometimes close friends with our fellow players, we don't want to hurt them more than they need or can tolerate (though in many cases that can be quite a lot!) and we would like to play with them again in the future.

Legal considerations exist as well. Authorities take a dim view of one treating a fellow human poorly and excusing it as 'He or she is my property'.
